Richard Morton is quite an interesting maker as he registered several marks:

1. September 16^th 1773 – “RM”

2. September 30^th 1773 – “RM & Co.” and “RM”

3. July 13^th 1780 – “RM”

4. February 12^th 1781 – “RM&Co.” and “RM”

These tongs are also interesting as they are exactly the same as many pairs of Bateman tongs of the period.  There is no sign that the maker’s mark is over-struck but these tongs are very definitely a Bateman style.  Without proper evidence we cannot be sure that these tongs were bought from the Bateman factory but it seems highly likely.
