These tongs are by James Hewitt & Robert Swan. Their mark is recorded at the Edinburgh Assay Office and can be seen on their web-site. They are recorded as being seen dating between 1784 and 1789. James Hewitt was born in 1731 and was mentioned between 1760 and 1808. Robert Swan was James Hewitt's apprentice and went into partnership with his former master. Robert Swan is recorded between 1786 and 1797. He apparently left Scotland in 1794.

This is a lovely pair of Scottish sugar tongs. It is very unusual to see the wavy edge. Tongs by this partnership are very rare.
