Charles Hougham registered his first mark on 11^th January 1769 as a small-worker.  He went on to register a number of marks as a buckle-maker and then other marks from 1785 as a plate-worker.  Clearly he had a wide range of talents!  He died in 1793 aged only 44 and the latest pairs of tongs that I have seen by him are dated 1792/93.  Charles and Solomon Hougham were brothers.  Solomon only entered his mark on the death of his brother.

His tongs are always of a very fine quality and are often engraved with a stylised flower pattern, (Adam style).  He made both cast and standard style tongs.

Charles Hougham is fairly easy to identify, his mark is always in a square punch.
