John Steward was Joseph Steward II’s son.  He registered his first mark on 26th June 1784 as a small-worker.  This was a script maker’s mark and there were several versions recorded.  He registered a very small mark in a rectangle on 19th May 1786 and then several more subsequently up to 20th August 1800.  He died some time between 1818 and 1822.  The attribution of these tongs to John Steward is not certain as there were several makers of this period with the maker's mark of "IS".
