These tongs are just over 4 inches (105 cms) long. They are in almost pristine condition and show no signs of any repair although the bottoms of the arms do appear as if they may have solder where they join the bowls. If they have been shortened then I suspect this was done before they were engraved as the bright cut engraving seems to be consistent. They are dated 1816/17. Interestingly they are bright cut and most of Eley & Fearn's work of this time was plain, without bright cut engraving. They still weigh 38.3 grams which is more than most standard full size London tongs of this period.
