| William
Bateman I was Hester Bateman's grandson, Jonathan and Ann's son. His
first mark entered alone was on 15th February 1815. William was
interesting in that he sold the Bateman family business in around 1840,
having entered the gas business about 1820. William Bateman II, (his
son), entered his mark in 1827 so it is reasonable to assume that William
Bateman I was working until then. Most silver sugar tongs by William
Bateman I tend to be the plain old English style, or the standard Bateman
neo-classical or thread edge style. Click on a picture for more details |
