Jonathan Perkins I registered his first mark on 23rd April 1772 as a small-worker. He then went on to register a number of other marks up to 6th November 1789, many as a buckle-maker. He registered a mark with his son on 5th August 1795 and then another on his own on 29th August 1800. We know that he made sugar tongs, as his partnership with his son also produced sugar tongs. James Perry was also working from 1st March 1763 until at least 18th December 1777, but he was registered as a hilt-maker so is unlikely to have been making sugar tongs. The marks of the two makers are very similar. Jonathan Perkins’ mark is not registered as having a pellet however, there are two pairs of tongs marked with JP with a pellet. His tongs are superb examples of early sugar tongs and are all dated between 1775 and 1784.
